Woo Chong Yung, (Wu Zhongxiong), (1898–1989), also known as C. Y. Woo, was a highly accomplished painter, calligrapher, and poet from Shanghai. Between 1920 and 1950, Woo was at the center of China’s cultural world, feted in art circles in both Shanghai and Beijing. His paintings were shown in prestigious exhibitions in China, Japan, and Europe. Faced with political persecution in the 1960s, Woo migrated to Worthington, Ohio, before the onset of the Cultural Revolution. Once in the United States, he became an active presence in Columbus, teaching Chinese painting and martial arts, exhibiting and lecturing at local colleges and universities, and contributing his talents to local arts councils and ethnic festivals in central Ohio. His paintings, seals, and personal effects are held almost exclusively by The Frank Museum of Art at Å·ÃÀÊÓƵ and the Cincinnati Art Museum. A richly illustrated catalogue with scholarly contributions accompanies the exhibition.

Made in collaboration with her mother, Cindy Kline, Amanda Le Kline’s work celebrates narratives of hard work, motherhood, and femininity. Through her multifaceted roles as worker, provider, and maker, Cindy’s experiences reflect the complexities inherent in women’s identities. Kline uses digital video, portraiture, and cyanotype quilting to convey their relationship and the reclaiming of traditionally feminine crafts as sources of strength and reverence.

Anne Wu’s work honors the conventions and practical objectives of traditional quilt-making, yet effects contemporary relevance by challenging those same strictures through alternate interpretations, materials, and techniques to explore and expand the foundational concept of using scraps and labor to keep family warm. Her work is accessible, seemingly simple, yet dizzyingly complex, whose ultimate significance is the creation of meaning.
